We’re holding an in-house session on Flash Fiction this meeting.
The focus will be on stories under 500 words. What to consider when writing flash fiction. Readings of 200 and 300 word stories as examples.
In the latter half of the meeting there’ll be a writing exercise with prompts.
We’re now into our autumn programme and September is going to be a fabulous month, starting with our guest speaker, local author Stephen Booth whose Cooper & Fry novels mix crime and mystery in the atmospheric Derbyshire Peak District.
Stephen has been a welcome guest at NWC in the past, so we’re delighted he can join us this month to talk about his books and his latest release ‘Fall Down Dead’.
He’ll also share some insights into what’s available to writers interested in writing crime.
There’ll be time for a Q&A and the opportunity to buy books and get them signed personally.

For our last summer Read and Write night of this year we have a couple of simple writing exercises, with time to listen to what results from your pens and keyboards.
When you have a writing problem it’s good to share with other writers who can not only sympathise but provide helpful suggestions, so we’ll be setting aside some time for this.
We can’t guarantee it will solve your writing problems but sometimes just talking about the issue helps…

As the June Read & Write night date also happens to be #National Writing Day we’ll be joining in at Wednesday’s session.
We have a dialogue exercise, as we’ve had a number of requests to revisit the topic- so our aim is to write the first draft of a ‘dialogue only’ story.
Writing Magazine also run a dialogue only story in the early part of the year, so come along to this week’s Read & Write night and try this style out. If it works for you, you’ll have the start of an entry for next year…

Our guest speaker this month is Sam Maxfield, author of six novels including her latest, Must be Mapton, the third in her humorous Mapton-on-Sea series.
Taking a comical view of life as a writer, Sam will talk about her Mapton series; and then provide tips on how to cope with the ups and downs of a writer’s life- for aspiring dreamers to full-time writers.
Sam holds a BA in English and History and an MA in Creative Writing from Nottingham Trent University, and has lectured in English Literature; as well as the role of Education Officer at the Broadway Cinema, before becoming a full-time writer four years ago.
Sam will have copies of her books to sell and sign on the night, including her latest release Must be Mapton.

Her debut novel, The Chalk Man, published by Penguin in January this year, has garnered lots of attention, especially since Stephen King tweeted ‘If you like my stuff, you’ll like this’.
The book has been described as ‘creepy’ and ‘a thriller’. So come along and find out for yourself’
Discover what happened once her manuscript got accepted, and how her writing life changed. There’ll also be time for a Q&A.

On Saturday 17th February join us for an afternoon of romance with our guest, local author Clare Harvey.
Clare is a former winner of the Romantic Novelists Association’s Joan Hessayon Award for New Writers.
We’re delighted to preview the format for our Saturday afternoon session.
Introduction:
Brief introduction from Clare, about herself and her books, and the aims of the afternoon. Followed by a short time for you to get to know the writers sharing your table.
Topics for the afternoon:
No one will have to read their work out, but discussion will be encouraged.
By the end of the afternoon you will have three pieces of writing that you can take home and continue to develop.
The final half hour is a Q&A, followed by the opportunity for you to purchase Clare’s books and get them personally signed.
