Saturday Writing Community

Welcome to our Saturday writing community meeting. Our monthly Saturday afternoon at The Playwright returns for 2024, and we hope you’ll join us.

Arrive early, 12.30 pm, and enjoy time to have lunch and chat, before the meeting begins at 1.30.

Last month, the members agreed the writing challenge subject for January will be: Don’t Say Sorry. Write a story up to 800 words (it can be less) and/or a poem. It’s not compulsory, so don’t worry if you don’t have the time, or write that quickly.

We’ll listen to the resulting stories and poems from 1.30 onward, and after that it’s open to attendees. Need constructive feedback on a piece of writing, or is there a writing topic you want to ask about? Then here’s your opportunity.

You don’t need to be an NWC member to join in with our Saturday afternoon meetings, but we hope you’ll like being a part of our writing community and want to join the club- contact us for up to date details and the 2023/24 membership form.

At this time of the year, weather can be a major issue, so if there’s snow or storms, please check our social media platforms, and the website calendar,  for any changes to planned meetings.

Meetings resume January 2024, and we’ll let you know the dates and locations as soon as they’re booked.

November Saturday Meeting- Competitions

Our November second Saturday meeting is competition time.

Last year we revived our annual Verse of the Year, and Manuscript of the Year competitions. While only NWC members can enter, we welcome visitors to join in judging the winner.

This year’s theme is ‘Lost’ and it’s clear there will be a number of interpretations for this word.

We’re starting at our usual 12.30 pm to allow time for lunch and chat, before we begin the competition.

Prose writers have 250 words excluding the title and their pseudonym -it’s fun guessing who wrote which story. And for the verse it’s up to 20 lines excluding the title and pseudonym.

Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite Verse, and/or Prose entry. We’ll count out the votes and announce the top three in reverse order, for each category, and discover who penned them.

Members near and far, have had since mid- September to think about, and write their entry/entries.

This is always a fun event, and if you want to be entertained, challenged, and amused, then come along to The Playwright.

If you’d like to know more about NWC membership, please use our contact form to send us a message, and we’ll get back to you as son as we can.

October Saturday and Get Spooky…

Join us for our October second Saturday where we get spooky.

This month, the writing challenge is to create a creepy story of around 800 words- or less. And an extra challenge is to include the word ‘creepy’ somewhere within the text.

We’re at our regular second-Saturday venue, The Playwright, in the events room, from 12.30 pm onward.

Arrive early for lunch, a drink, and chat with other writers, and then from 1.30 it’s hearing the creepy tales. Expect fun and shivers aplenty from a bunch of talented writers.

Interested in our annual membership? Then please use our contact form to find out more.

Don’t forget to bring along something to write with, as we have fun exercises that will get you and your mind, working with words.

Second Saturday in September

Our September second Saturday meeting at The Playwright, and this is the first of our autumn meetings.

The Saturday meetings allows time to chat, write, and if you’ve done the fun homework- read it out, or not.

Arrive at 12.30 to get lunch, a drink, and chat with other early arrivals. Then from 1.30 pm the session ramps up with the results of the writing homework (set the previous month). But we’re flexible, so don’t worry if you can’t arrive until later.

There’s always a writing session, and the opportunity to read work out for constructive comment.

If you’d like to try the homework theme, here it is: a short story (between 400 and 800 words). ‘At least next time I won’t have to dismantle the piano’.

We finish around 4 pm, and you’re welcome to stay longer. Or if you need to leave early, that’s okay too.

Any questions about the meetings, or you’d like to join NWC, please use our contact form.

NWC at The Playwright…

You can join NWC at The Playwright for our August second Saturday meeting.

Second-Saturday Meeting at The Playwright

All are welcome to our informal and varied afternoon session, where you can meet and chat with friendly, welcoming writers.

The writing challenge for this month is to write a story around 800 words, and combining the themes of the paranormal and artificial intelligence (AI). There’s no compulsion to take part in this aspect, nor read out your story if you do- someone else will be happy to read it out for you.

Arrive early- 12.30 pm- and order your lunch, then spend the hour chatting with others members and visitors.

From 1.30 it’s full ahead with a mix of content suitable for all levels of ability.

Timings are flexible, so arrive and leave at times to fit your circumstances. And we’re close to public transport links- buses, tram, and Nottingham railway station (via the tram from the Royal Centre stop).
